Meadville Medical Center welcomes students interested in job shadowing or completing an internship, but asks that candidates familiarize themselves with requirements and exclusions listed below before applying with Human Resources. Required paperwork and clearances may also affect a tentative start date.
Please note that both job shadowing and internships are unpaid and for experience only.
Observational-only opportunity with maximum of 8 hours total
Job shadowing opportunities allow high school students and adults interested in pursuing a health care career an opportunity to observe aspects of patient care and the operations of a hospital. If job shadowing is needed to fulfill a senior project, application requirements are reflected below. There is no required orientation for job shadowing.
Practical experience with hours set by department manager
Internships at Meadville Medical Center provide students with practical experiences in their field of study while earning credit toward a particular degree. No-credit internships are also an option.
To be placed in an internship at Meadville Medical Center, the student will need to contact the department manager/supervisor about completing an internship in that respective department. It is then up to the department manager to determine if the student is needed in their department at that time, and if so, the student will be placed with the appropriate department(s) once the manager has agreed to accept the student.
Some interns have remained with MMC immediately after their internship ends as part- or full-time employees. However, interns are not automatically offered a position at the end of the internship, and must go through the MMC hiring process if interested in an employment opportunity.
Once a manger accepts the student for placement, the student must be cleared by Human Resources. The student will need to submit all required documentation, vaccination records, 2-step TB test results, and clearances to Human Resources.
Often these requirements take a couple of weeks to complete, so please reach to Human Resources as soon as possible to ensure you can start you internship on time!
*Applicants can utilize IdentoGo on Chestnut Street in Meadville. Additional costs will be required.
“During my internship with WIC, I was able to take what I was actively learning in the classroom about public health and health equity and apply it to real world situations. I was able to learn about what a wonderful resource WIC is for families, as well as about so many other resources offered in the community. My internship also provided me with skills that will carry over to any role I have in the future. “
“My experience as an MMC intern has helped show me the importance of communications, my major, in the medical industry as well as give me an understanding of how I will apply my studies to a future career. I loved getting to know and work with the team at the Foundation and the opportunity to apply real-world skills of media creation, strategic communications, and the use of comparative research in the industry.”
